An alphabetical index to the songs in the Personal Copy manuscript.

This index has been prepared for the benefit of those who may be looking for particular songs in the Baring-Gould Manuscripts. It has been compiled from the Personal Copy and lists each of the songs together with page numbers as given by Baring-Gould together with his song numbers. Although the second and third manuscript volumes had been indexed, presumably by Baring-Gould himself, there are a number of difficulties (described below) that make these indices less helpful than they might be. There are also a number of inconsistencies in the pagination and numbering used, such as duplicated page numbers.

Because of these inconsistencies I have devised a reference system that identifies each song by the volume number, the page number and the song number. In this way it is possible to find songs easily. Thus 'Sweet Nightingale', which is in the Personal Copy, Volume 1, page 46, and numbered 15 (in Roman numerals) is designated P1, 46 (15). In each case the pagination and the song numbering is that used by Baring-Gould. I have also recorded where he repeated song numbers by using the designation 'bis' for the second occurrence.
