There are some recordings and books about Sabine Baring-Gould’s song collection that are available at the present time. Some of them are listed below.
Recordings
Our previous CDs, Parallel Strands (2005) and Dusty Diamonds (2008) have been sold out for some time and we have had to disappoint a number of people who have asked for them. Calm and Collected brings together 16 tracks from those CDs. We have also added three tracks from the CD from that we recorded in 2013 to go with the book Folk Songs in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite written by Prof. Robert Garofalo. We are grateful to him for permission to include them here. All of these tracks were recorded and produced by Doug Bailey who has also mastered this compilation. We remain deeply grateful for his skill and encouragement. And we hope that you will enjoy this collection.

Dead Maid’s Land from Wildgoose Records, is a recording of songs from the Baring-Gould collection performed by a number of singers and musicians led by Paul Wilson and Marilyn Tucker,and including Tim Laycock, Martin Graebe, Chris Foster, Phil Humphries, Ellen Thomson and Bob Tinker. A fresh look at the Victorian polymath, Sabine Baring-Gould, and his pioneering project to document the songs of the ordinary people of Devon and Cornwall. In this fascinating account Martin Graebe has uncovered new material on Baring-Gould’s life and describes his relationship with the singers he met and with other folk song collectors such as Lucy Broadwood, Cecil Sharp, Francis Child and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Includes an article on the music in the collection by Julia Bishop, as well as several examples of the songs and their stories.

Iceland: its Scenes and sagas was written by Baring-Gould in 1863, following his journey to Iceland in the previous year. This new edition, published by Signal Books in 2007, includes a new foreword by Martin Graebe. For details go to Signal Books
A Garland of Country Song, Baring-Gould and Fleetwood Sheppard’s second published collection is available as a reprint from Llanerch Press with a new introduction by Martin Graebe. Details from Llanerch Press.
Llanerch’s catalogue also includes an abbreviated selection from Baring-Gould’s English Minstrelsie, but few folk songs are included. They have also published a number of volumes of his work on British saints.
The William Andrews Tune Book is a collection of tunes collected by Baring-Gould from the Old Dartmoor fiddler, William Andrew of Sheepstor edited by Paul Wilson and Chris Bartram. Available from Wren Music at www.wrenmusic.co.uk.
